Hyderabad is a thriving and increasingly cosmopolitan city. It has a rich history dating back over 500 years to its founding in 1463 when the Golconda fort was built.

Hyderabad is located on the Deccan Plateau in south central India. It is located about 200 miles inland from the west coast of India and has an elevation of about 500 meters.

Due to it's relatively higher elevation, Hyderabad has somewhat cooler weather than coastal India. It has a dry and wet season where the wet season, driven by seasonal monsoons, runs from late June to early October.

Hyderabad is the largest economic center in Andhra Pradesh. Like many parts of India, information technology (IT) related companies have thrived in Hyderabad in recent years. Call centers and business process outsourcing (BPO) are big in the city. The biotechnology and pharmaceuticals industries are also strong.

Some of the main attractions of the city are Charminar, a large mosque with towering minarets; Gloconda Fort, a gigantic complex with an outer wall that measures 10km, and Paigah Tombs, beautifully carved structures with marble inlays.

Hyderabad has a strong Islamic history and Islamic influences are prominent in architecture and the local culture.

In Hyderabad, Telugu and Urdu are the primary languages spoken. English is also spoken widely and used heavily in business. Over 50% of Hyderabad residents are Muslims. Hindus account for another 40%.
